Biographical Data
Nancy M. Gordon is the Associate Director for Strategic Planning
and Innovation at the U.S. Census Bureau.
She directs the development of the Census Bureau’s strategic
plan, which defines its mission,
long term goals, and objectives. Her main focus is the Census Bureau’s
increased efforts to meet the needs of policymakers in dealing with
critical economic and social issues, by working collaboratively
with federal, state, and local stakeholders. She is responsible
for coordinating work to develop innovative products that take advantage
of the information revolution to provide data that were never available
before, without increasing the burden on respondents.
Until July 2005, she was the Associate Director for Demographic
Programs, where she provided executive leadership for all of the
Census Bureau's demographic divisions with over 800 employees and
an annual budget of $300 million. She led the areas of the Census
Bureau that produce the estimates and projections that drive the
allocation of about $200 billion in federal funds each year, and
that collect data for many other government agencies.
Prior to coming to the Census Bureau, she served as Assistant Director
for Health and Human Resources at the Congressional Budget Office.
She was also a Brookings Economic Policy
Fellow while on leave from Carnegie Mellon University, where she
was on the faculty of the Graduate School of Industrial Administration.
She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and an elected
member of the International Statistical Institute. She received
her B.A. in Economics and Statistics from the University of California
at Berkeley and her Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.
